Hautapu Sports to field senior men’s and women’s hockey teams for first time

posted in: Hockey, News

Hautapu Sports will launch senior men’s and women’s hockey teams in 2024, entering them into Waikato competitions.

The decision to field senior teams follows the rapid growth of junior and intermediate hockey programmes at the club over the past three years.

Coaches have been appointed for the inaugural women’s and men’s teams, and the club is now recruiting players who want to play in the inaugural season.

The club is keen to attract interest from lapsed players, those who have enjoyed hockey at high school level and newcomers to the area. All will be welcome.

Danelda Van Der Merwe will coach the women’s team, while the men’s team will be managed by Mike Fredrickson and Mark (Woody) Woods.

Muster evening planned

A muster/registration evening for senior players will be held on Thursday February 8, 2024, from 5pm-7 pm, at the Hautapu Sports Club clubrooms, Memorial Park, Cambridge.

Background

Rising interest in hockey saw Hautapu Sports field 26 primary teams and six intermediate teams in 2023, catering for more than 260 junior players.

Junior hockey director Marie Dale said: “On the back of the success of the Hautapu Club’s junior programme, it is only natural that the next step would be to create an opportunity for those juniors to continue their hockey journey with Hautapu sports by creating both senior men’s and women’s hockey teams at the club for them to aspire too.

“Hautapu Sports Club is already a highly respected name in Waikato’s netball and rugby competitions but after the idea was recently presented to the club’s committee, members have unanimously shown their support for Hautapu Sports to welcome a senior hockey programme into the club.”
