Hautapu Sports’ hockey players and coaches are getting ready for the club’s biggest season yet, with four senior teams set to play this year.
After the club’s inaugural senior hockey season in 2024, Hautapu Sports will field two women’s and two men’s sides in this season’s Waikato competitions.
Registrations are still open for senior, intermediate and junior hockey players.
The club held a pre-season session for coaches, senior and intermediate players on the turf at St Peter’s on Sunday March 2.
Former Black Sticks player and coach Darren Smith held a coach-the-coaches session that benefitted the club’s junior coaches, in particular.
He was joined by his wife Beth, a former Black Sticks goalkeeper and current Hautapu Sports player, and Bjorn Krauer, who is Hautapu’s senior hockey club captain and goalkeeper coach.
Intermediate players (years 7 and 8) were treated to a skills session, with goalkeeper coaching for those keen to get between the posts.
The day ended with a game, and the players were grateful to the three coaches for delivering a fun and beneficial session.
Senior players took part in trial games to help finalise teams for their new season which starts on March 16, 2025.
Last season, the club fielded two senior teams, enjoying an outstanding first season on and off the pitch.
