Opening day for premier and colts rugby delayed for a month due to pandemic

The start of the 2022 senior and colts rugby season has been delayed till Saturday April 23 as a result of increasing cases of COVID in the Waikato.

This follows a meeting of Waikato rugby clubs and confirmation of plans for the season ahead.

Hautapu Sports Club president Dave Simes (main photo) said the delay would mean coaches would need to revise their pre-season training plans and they would meet as soon as possible to consider the impact.

Instead of an opening day on Saturday March 26, the Premier A and B grades and Colts grade (U-21) will launch four weeks later but using the same draw made in December — games will play in the same order, but with revised dates.

No fixtures will be scheduled for June 4 (Queen’s Birthday weekend) though the weekend could be used to play any postponed games.

Competition finals are planned for Saturday July 16.
