Cambridge rugby referee Gareth Cogan has enjoyed a taste of international action, acting as a match official for games between New Zealand, Australia and Samoa.

Cogan was selected as an assistant referee for the New Zealand Schools and New Zealand U-18 international fixtures against Australia and Samoa, which took place in October 2024.

“They were great matches to be involved in,” he says.

“There was some fantastic talent on display and I’m extremely grateful to have been given the opportunity to see it all up close and to contribute as a match official.”

Cogan said refereeing provided some excellent opportunities, particularly in Cambridge.

“I’d strongly encourage anyone to pick up the whistle and give it a go,” he said.

“For those perhaps coming to the end of their playing days, refereeing is a great way to stay in the game and keep fit.”

The Cambridge Rugby Referees Association says refereeing suits a wide range of participants, including:

  • Are you a parent who would like to referee your child’s game?
  • Are you a high school student who would like to learn more about refereeing by being an assistant referee for senior games on a Saturday afternoon?
  • Are you a senior player who could help out by refereeing or assistant refereeing a junior/high school game on a Saturday morning?

They welcome anyone wishing to learn more about refereeing and help to ensure that rugby games in Cambridge get the officials they require.
