Hautapu’s senior hockey teams ready to make their competitive debuts

posted in: Hockey, News, Uncategorized

Senior women’s and men’s hockey teams will represent Hautapu Sports Club for the first time when they start their 2024 seasons on Sunday March 17.

The newly-formed teams make their competitive debuts in the Waikato Hockey Association’s senior competitions, with games at the Gallagher Hockey Centre, Innes Common, Hamilton.

The men are first up, at 10.20am, when they play Penny’s Bookstore Old Boys.

The women then play Suburbs Strikers, starting at 11.40am.

Both games are on the Turf 1 pitch, and both teams would welcome support, especially to help them celebrate the club’s first venture into senior hockey.

The men’s team will compete in the 2024 Men’s Reserve 3 competition, an eight-team competition in which the other teams are:

  • Concept Joinery Old Boys
  • Fraser Tech Men’s Development
  • Penny’s Bookstore Old Boys
  • Suburbs Junior Development
  • Suburbs Reserve 3
  • TA Absolute Storage
  • Varsity A1 Storage

The Hautapu women’s team will compete in the Women’s Senior Reserve 3 competition, a six-team competition. Their competitors are:

  • Culswick Wanderers Reserve 2
  • FTHC Cruisey Blues
  • Suburbs Strikers
  • Swampfrog Old Girls
  • Varsity Chicks

How it all came about …

Rising interest in hockey saw Hautapu Sports field 26 primary teams and six intermediate teams in 2023, catering for more than 260 junior players.

Junior hockey director Marie Dale said: “On the back of the success of the Hautapu Club’s junior programme, it is only natural that the next step would be to create an opportunity for those juniors to continue their hockey journey with Hautapu sports by creating both senior men’s and women’s hockey teams at the club for them to aspire too.

“Hautapu Sports Club is already a highly respected name in Waikato’s netball and rugby competitions but after the idea was recently presented to the club’s committee, members have unanimously shown their support for Hautapu Sports to welcome a senior hockey programme into the club.”
