Hautapu Sports’ Colts have won their opening day rugby fixture in the most difficult of circumstances, beating a strong Hamilton Old Boys team 21-12.
Going into the game, Hautapu’s squad was reduced to a bare 15 players after COVID, injuries and player absences depleted the Colts’ ranks.
Playing their opening game away from home added to the challenge but the side knuckled down and won with a Epalahame Ma’u Hinkes try and two Rui Farrant penalties in the dying stages of the game.
Those points capped a fine second-half fightback which was a true team effort, with every player making a contribution.
Next week’s game is against Te Awamutu Sports and the Colts expect to have a number of extra players available for selection.
