Senior rugby squads named for weekend fixtures

Hautapu Sports will defend the George Simpkin Shield when they host United Matamata Sports in their Waikato Rugby Premier match at Memorial Park on Saturday.

The Power Farming-sponsored shield is contested by rural clubs in the Premier competition, with holders obliged to defend it against challengers when playing at home.

It is named after the late George Simpkin (1943-2020) who was an innovative coach who led the Waikato NPC side to 56 consecutive victories, and coached sevens teams internationally.

He is credited with helping develop the concept of a plastic kicking tee.

Three of Hautapu Sports' four senior sides will play at home on Saturday — the Premier A,  Development and U-21 teams — while the Women's Premier squad travel to Hamilton's Flagstaff Park to take on Suburbs.
